River of Heroes

I had a chance to play some of the river of heroes campaign and have found it quite enjoyable. The Soviets have a lot of great new additions in this campaign such as sappers and flame tanks to lead the assault. This follows up on hammer and sickle as the Soviets make their push towards the heart of Germany.

As a German player expect to be on the defensive a lot. Having lots of fortifications will help stop wave after wave of soviet troops that are racing towards Berlin. Also be prepared to face a lot of very heavy tanks that will stand up to some very heavy firepower.

As a Soviet player you can expect to be breaking through enemy lines hard and fast. Putting your sappers flame tanks and the all powerful heavy assault guns in the right positions to punch through the German fortifications is no easy task. The Germans are tough as nails and will fight to the last man in defense of their homeland.

Artillery Rereleases

There have been a few artillery re releases in the last couple of waves. Artillery is one of those essential pieces in many armies so it makes sense that they are ones to receive an update. Both the Royal Artillery 25 pounders and the German 10.5 cm artillery pieces have had a face lift. Each of these re releases comes with a new staff team which I must admit look very nice.

If you currently have the old versions of these artillery pieces I don’t know if it will be worth it to upgrade to the new version. It is a shame that you can’t get the new staff team as a stand alone piece as that would let people with the old models upgrade to the new look without needing extra guns.

If you only have a 4 gun british section though pick this up for sure because no brit infantry company is complete without an 8 gun section.

Sturmtiger Platoon

The Sturmtiger in Flames of War is a fearsome weapon mounted on a tiger chassis. Imagine dropping a house packed with explosives on an enemy and you’ll start coming close to the destructive power of this unit.

This weapon fires bombardments but it only gets 1 chance to range in on the enemy. Should you hit though any infantry or unarmoured vehicles caught in the blast is killed outright on a 5+ with no chance to save. If a tank is unlucky enough to be caught there it is hit with an AT6 hit to its top armour.

You can field these bad boys in the River of Heroes Handbook which is a follow up to Hammer and Sickle.

Amazing Army Transport Case

This is quite possibly the coolest army transport case I’ve seen in awhile. Who wouldn’t want to carry their Flames of War army around in an ammo box?

German Jagdpanzer 38(t) Hetzer

The Jagdpanzer 38(t) Hetzer
is a specialized tank. It is only available to Hammer and Sickle veteran tank hunters platoon but if you are playing the list it is a nice addition. Being veterans they get access to the abilities “shoot and scoot” and “manuvre and fire”.

Their stats are decent too.

Fully-tracked with Armour Front 7, Side 2, Top 1. It is armed with Hull MG and 7.5cm PaK39 gun. The 7.5cm PaK39 gun has a range of 32”/80cm, ROF 2, Anti-tank 11 and Firepower 3+.

The only downside is they are overloaded.

German 8.8cm PaK43 Gun

Since the Soviets just got a new heavy tank list the germans were bound to get a model to help deal with that threat. The Pak43 is that answer. Able to penetrate any armour this anti tank gun is what you want if you’re going to be running up against very heavy armour.

This gun has an AT rating of 16. Yes that isn’t a typo 16. This is enough to make even an IS-2 commander think twice. If you’re running a late war german force that sees a lot of enemy heavy tanks, pick this unit up. Its a monster.

Assault Gun Company ISU-122

The April 27th releases for flames of war include the Soviet Assult Gun Company. These guys have decent AP but their strength lies in their firepower. at 2+ they pretty much guarantee they will kill anything dug into bulletproof cover. They are also going to force bailouts more often making them effective against medium tanks. The ISU-122’s are a great addition If you are running a late war Soviet force consider adding these guys in for some massive support.

Flames of War April 11th Releases

There are 5 new releases coming on April 11th for Flames of War. 4 of them are for the soviets and one for the Germans. If you’re a fan of big guns, American armour on lease to the soviets, amphibious vehicles or nasty AA guns then there is something for you in this release.

First up we have the FlaK Nests for the German late war army. These guys were set up on roofs and in attics to help swat pesky planes out of the sky. With quad 2cm (20mm) cannons these could put holes in enemy armour as well. They look really cool as they come with a building that the cannon sits on.

The next release is the Ford GPA Amphibous Jeep for the Soviets. This guy was well suited to river crossings. A pretty situational model, but if you are planning on playing some river based battles it might be worth looking into.

Next up is another item that was loaned to the Soviets near the end of the war. The M-10 tank was shipped in limited numbers at the end of the war and as such didn’t see that much service. If you are playing late war Soviets it might make for a nice themed force.

With all the heavy armour the Germans had in the late war the Soviets needed something that packed some serious punch. The 85mm obr 1939 gun was the solution to this problem. This guy can punch holes in the heaviest armour.

Finally we have some stealthy recon for the Soviets. The Spetsnaz Platoon has all your recon needs covered. Hard to detect, deadly from an ambush these infantrymen are fearless and will get the job done. They get to use the Forward Detachment and Decoy special rules so you know they’re going to be a thorn in any opponents side.

Hammer and Sickle Mission

The first addon mission for Hammer and Sickle has been released and you can grab it here. The Thing I really like about Flames of War is that they are constantly putting out new scenarios to play even after the main books have been released. This looks like a fun mission. I can’t wait to try it out.
